55+ in Farr West: A Guide to the Senior Center, Staying Active and Downsizing

by Dessa Wright

Farr West is a great place to slow down without slowing down too much. You'll find a small-town feel, wide-open views of Ben Lomond, and a surprising amount to do if you're 55 or older. Whether you've lived here for decades or you're thinking about moving closer to the grandkids, here's my local guide.

The Farr West Senior Center

The Farr West Senior Center offers free programs for adults 55 and older. It's open Monday through Thursday, 8 am to noon, at City Hall (1896 N 1800 W). The weekly schedule includes:

Activity When
Power walking Mon, Tue and Thu, 8:30 am
Quilting Mon and Tue, 9 am
Stained glass Wed, 9 am
Wii bowling Tue, 10:30 am
Pickleball at the Rec Center Wed and Thu, 10 am

The center also hosts workshops and seasonal celebrations. Call 801-731-4187 to ask about the current schedule.

A free Rec Center membership for seniors

The Farr West Recreation Center, in the same building, has exercise equipment, a basketball court and pickleball courts. Seniors get a free lifetime membership. There's also Senior Open Play Pickleball for ages 55+ every Friday from 8 to 10 am, for just $2.

More ways to stay active

  • Golf: Remuda Golf Course (2600 W 3500 N) has a course and a driving range right here in town.
  • Parks and walking paths: Farr West has five city parks, including Smith Family Park and Farr West Park, and a growing trail network.
  • Community events: The Farr West Freedom Festival runs each summer leading up to the Fourth of July, and the city holds veterans celebrations through the year.

Where 55+ buyers live in Farr West

  • A 55+ community: Westwood Village (1111 N 2000 W) is an age-qualified 55+ manufactured home community. It has a clubhouse, fitness center, pool, hot tub, game room and community activities, and it's pet friendly.
  • Low-maintenance townhomes: Legends Crossing, by Visionary Homes, has newer townhomes with walking trails and a park.
  • Single-level homes on established streets: Older Farr West neighborhoods have ramblers (one-story homes), often on larger lots.

Thinking about downsizing? Start here

  1. Decide what you really need. Count the bedrooms you use and whether stairs are a problem.
  2. Find out what your home is worth. Many longtime Farr West homeowners have built up a lot of equity (the part of the home's value you own outright).
  3. Plan the order. Should you sell first, buy first, or line them up together? Each has trade-offs, and an agent can help you choose.
  4. Start sorting early. Going room by room a few months ahead makes moving day far less stressful.
  5. Ask about property tax relief. Weber County has programs that may lower property taxes for some seniors and veterans. Call the county to see if you qualify.
