Farr West Is Rewriting Its General Plan. Here's How to Have a Say
Farr West is updating its General Plan, and it's one of the biggest decisions the city will make this decade. Whether you've lived here 40 years or just moved in, this plan will shape what gets built near you. Here's what it is, what's happening now, and how to make your voice heard.
What is a General Plan?
A General Plan is a city's long-range map and vision for the future. It guides where new homes, businesses, parks and roads should go. When someone asks to rezone a property, the Planning Commission and City Council check whether the request fits the General Plan. In August, for example, a council member pointed out that the General Plan did not allow manufacturing zoning in one part of town.
Farr West's current General Plan was adopted in 2022. Now the city is updating it to plan for the next 15 to 20 years.
What's happened so far
- July 16, 2026: The City Council took up a resolution creating a temporary General Plan advisory committee to review proposals for the update.
- August 7, 2026: A selection board met to review proposals and pick a consultant.
- October 1, 2026: The City Council considered an agreement with the Wasatch Front Regional Council, the regional planning group for Northern Utah. Under it, the planning firm Citi Design would help update the plan, with a budget of up to $130,000 and work running through mid-2028.
What the update will look at
According to the project description, the new plan will tie together land use, transportation, economic development and open space, and will model different ways Farr West could grow.
The agreement also lays out how residents get involved:
- Public workshops, where residents work in small groups to sketch out different futures for Farr West
- A community survey on what residents value: growth, housing choices, traffic and transportation, community character, local business, parks, trails, and what to preserve
Why it matters for homeowners and buyers
- If you own a home: The plan helps decide whether the field behind you stays open space, becomes homes, or becomes something else.
- If you're buying: It hints at where Farr West is headed: where new neighborhoods, roads and shopping may go.
- If you're investing: Land marked for future homes or business in the General Plan has a better chance of being rezoned someday. Land that isn't, not so much.
